| Multimedia-centric Linux OS adds A/V goodies |

StartCom has updated its multimedia-oriented Linux desktop with new features targeted at audio/video fans. While it can also serve as a general purpose desktop, StartCom MultiMedia Edition version ML-5.0.6 comes preloaded with a variety of tools to hear, view, edit, mix, dub, finish, and share music and video projects, the company says.
The updated offering, codenamed "Kessem," features 3D OpenGL, a TV/video/file streaming server and client, Cinelerra, Rosegarden, Audacity, and an assortment of sound manipulating effect tools, synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers, the company said on its website.
New in the update is VideoLAN's cross-platform media player, VLC Media Player. According to VideoLAN, VLC Media Player supports a large number of multimedia formats, without the need for additional codecs. It can also be used as a streaming server, with extended features like video on demand (VoD) and on-the-fly transcoding.

In particular, the distribution features a new design and that makes it easy to share music and video throughout the local network, StartCom says.

Automatically installed defaults in the new version of the OS include the Firefox web browser, Thunderbird email client, OpenOffice office suite, and Pidgin chat client, according to the project's website.
Standard desktop Linux applications included in StartCom MultiMedia Edition version ML-5.0.6 are said to include:- Linux kernel 2.6.16

- Thunderbird 2.0.0
- Pidgin 2.2.1
- OpenOffice 2.3
StartCom Multimedia Edition is intended for use with the Intel/AMD 386 and AMD x86_64 architectures. Compatibility with the x86_64 architecture is new for this version. The OS is based on the company’s enterprise offering, StartCom Enterprise Linux AS, code-named "Barak."
StartCom says that all of its Linux OSes are based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora sourcees. The company claims that its modifications to Red Hat and Fedora improve reliability, security, and efficiency.
The 638 MB StartCom MultiMedia Edition ML-5.0.6 DVD ISO image can be downloaded for free, here, or ordered for a fee, here. Alternative installation options via network or hard-drive are also available. Additional screenshots of StartCom MultiMedia Edition are available on StartCom's website, here.
