| OpenSUSE 10.2 alpha 4 hits the web |

Distro maintainer Andrea Jaeger on Sept. 7 announced the availability of the fourth alpha release of openSUSE 10.2, which uses an updated Linux kernel and offers a choice between the GNOME 2.16 Beta (2.15.92), KDE 3.5.4 or Xfce 4.2.3 desktop environments.
"We've made a number of significant changes [including] switching to kernel 2.6.18rc5 -- and we use only the SMP kernel," Jaeger wrote in the release announcement.
Other key improvements, according to Jaeger, include:- KDE now uses the new kickoff menu
- finished integration of X11 R7.1
- further refinement of patterns used in the package manager for grouping of software
- started removal of unneeded SuSEconfig scripts
- no reboot after CD1
- YaST runs during installation in a window
Other standard features include:- Choice of OpenOffice.org, KOffice, GNOME Office
- Evolution 2.8 email client
- GAIM 1.5.0 instant messenger
- MySQL 5.0.24 database
- SendMail 8.13.8 or Thunderbird 1.99.1 email client
