| Puppy Linux project spins 2.01th release |
Jun. 19, 2006
Puppy Linux 2.01 was launched June 19 for i386 PCs, a mere 18 days following the dispatch of v2.0. The new edition sports an upgraded 2.6.16.7 kernel and the JWM desktop environment, and the live CD iso file weighs in at just 70.8 MB.
Key features, as touted by the Australia-based project team, include:
- 2.6.16.7 kernel
- OpenOffice.org 1.1.4
- GAIM 1.5.0
- Mozilla 1.8b1
- X.org.6.8.1
Other improvements, according to the team, include:- Booting from CD in a RAM-challenged PC (32-128 MB) has significant performance improvement. A swap file is now automatically created.
- ALSA sound has been upgraded to version 1.0.11, to recognize recent sound chips.
- Tcl/Tk has been upgraded to 8.5a4 and now has font antialiasing, that automatically works on all Tcl/Tk GUI apps.
- The audio recorder/editor is now mhWaveEdit, version 1.4.8, replacing the snack library and XS editor.
- Unclutter is a utility to auto-hide the mouse pointer when it isn't moving. It is configured via the Mouse Wizard.
- Installing to hard drive is improved, but there are still issues installing over an existing installation of Puppy 1.x or other distro -- best to wipe beforehand. Additionally, the Installer's handling of creating a boot floppy is messy.
- Lots of bugfixes.
Puppy's most redeeming feature is that it has a small footprint yet is full-featured, including all sorts of configuration and application installation wizards. The whole OS is small enough to run directly from system RAM. The result is that all applications start quickly and respond to user input instantly. Another advantage is that Puppy can often be a great choice for older, under-powered hardware.
