| Seagate ships select hard drives LindowsOS pre-loaded |
Sep. 24, 2003
Seagate has teamed up with Lindows.com to offer a popular hard drive pre-loaded with LindowsOS. The product will be available under a new program that is set to run initially through December 2003, targeting OEMs and "whitebox" vendors.
John Paulsen, spokesman for Seagate, told DesktopLinux.com that his company is "always looking to take a proactive role in helping the reseller base. The Barracuda hard drive, paired with LindowsOS, proved to be an interesting opportunity to help our partners expand their PC markets."
Paulsen said the pre-loaded systems target growing markets for very low-cost PCs, including SOHO markets where companies or home users are looking to add inexpensive PCs to their existing base of desktop computers.
According to a joint statement from both companies, this program offers a savings of up to $100 per computer shipped. The hard drives plug into any Intel-compatible PC and autodetect the hardware configuration, thereby reducing integration time for OEMs.
LindowsOS-loaded Barracuda drives are available "soon" from national distributors Bell Microproducts Inc. or Synnex Information Technologies Inc.
There is no word on adding any other Seagate hard drives or OS vendors to the program at this time, stated Paulsen.
