New Move Live CD lets users try Mandrake Linux, save files
Oct. 06, 2004

Mandrakesoft has released Move, a Live CD version of its Linux system that can store configuration files and personal data on USB keys. The new version of the Move CD lets users test Linux and also store up to 1.5 GB of data.

Based on Mandrakesoft's Mandrakelinux 10.0, Move is a full Linux system with over forty applications, including applications OpenOffice.org productivity suite, GIMP image editing program, and other essential tools. Move comes as a boxed product with a user manual in English or French, 30-day web support, and a membership to Mandrakeclub for 29.90 EUR / US $32.90.

The CD distribution lets beginners sample Linux completely on a CD without repartitioning their hard drive, and gives advanced users a lightweight Linux system they can take anywhere with file storage.

Need more space?

Computer users who need to be mobile and save more data than the Move CD allows can also use the recently released MandrakeLinux Globetrotter. Introduced in August, Globetrotter is a 40GB hard drive that attaches to a system's USB port, allowing users to use their PC as a Linux desktop, without modifying the host computer. The technique is similar to the way a "LiveCD" allows users to try Linux without installing, repartitioning, or disturbing an existing OS configuration. The device ships with Mandrake 10 Desktop and includes OpenOffice.org, PIM software including Kontact and Evolution, and development tools. Globetrotter includes thirty days of web support, and membership to online subsciptions of Mandrakeclub and Mandrakeonline for one month, according to the French software maker.
