Sep. 29, 2006
Canonical Ltd. and the Ubuntu development team announced today that the first beta release of Ubuntu 6.10 is now available for download and testing. It features a 2.6.17 kernel and the GNOME desktop. The corresponding Kubuntu beta, of course, sports a KDE desktop.
The initial beta version follows three alphas, the most recent being released on Sept. 16.
Key new features, as listed by the team, include: - GNOME 2.16
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 RC2 and support for GNOME Office
- X.Org 7.1
- task selection for easier installation of mail servers, web servers, etc.
"Edgy Eft (the code-name for v 6.10) also includes a pre-release of the upcoming LTSP 5.0 with support for local devices, printers on thin clients as well as language and session selection from the LTSP login manager," Ubuntu development team member Matt Zimmerman said in the release announcement.
"It also include network swapping, etherboot support out of the box, and many more additions and improvements."
Standard features in Ubuntu, as listed by the team, include:- OpenOffice.org 2.03
- GAIM 2.0 messenger
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- MySQL 5.0.22 database
The Kubuntu version has all of the above features but substitutes KDE for Ubuntu's GNOME desktop, including KDE 3.5.4, Konversation 1.0, and Amarok 1.4.3, with automatic installation of MP3 support.
