India's government paves way to low cost Acer Linux laptop

India's Economic Times reports that Acer India is offering a Celeron-based laptop running Red Hat Linux at a breakthrough price of sub-Rs 44k (US sub-$1000). The notebook PC has a 2.5ghz processor with 128MB memory and 20GB hard disk among features. The Indian government has offered incentives to stimulate sales in the computer industry such as eliminating a 4% special tax assessment, "reduced basic custom duty from 15% to 10% and shrunk the excise duty from 16% to 8%," says the report.
