New Xandros Linux release extends Windows app support
Jul. 27, 2004

Xandros announced an upgrade to its OS today, extending Linux desktop support for Windows applications. With the new release, users can now download and install Codeweaver's latest CrossOver Office with a single click.

With the release of version 2.5, Xandros Desktop users get CrossOver Office 3.0.1 with support for Lotus Notes 6.5.1, Microsoft Project 2000/2002, and Microsoft Outlook XP. Current Xandros users can access the upgrade of CrossOver Office using Xandros Networks.

The 2.5 upgrade is available for both the Deluxe and Business versions of the Xandros OS. The OS is based on the Linux kernel 2.4.24 and version 1.6 of Mozilla.

Premium subscribers to Xandros Networks can download CrossOver Office 3.0.1 for US $24, a 40 percent discount off of the regular price.

CrossOver Office now supports over 30 popular Windows applications. In addition to Microsoft Office, Visio, and Internet Explorer, Intuit Quicken, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash, Adobe Photoshop, and other popular Windows-based applications, the new release extends Linux support to Lotus Notes 6.51, Microsoft Outlook XP, and Microsoft Project. With the new release, Codeweavers has also integrated its browser plug-in application into all CrossOver Office products, extending CrossOver Plugin support for popular browser plug-ins such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, eFax, iPIX, QuickTime, Real Player, Shockwave Director, Windows Media Player, and Macromedia Flash.

Formerly Corel Linux, Xandros is not only addressing enterprise needs for Windows compatibility, but is also meeting the growing demand for tools to manage Linux. By introducing a a software management tool, xDMS in April, Xandros offers system administrators a strategy to manage their Linux deployments. The easy-to-use utility sets up software repositories from multiple sources, manages software inventories, establishes managed groups of networked PCs, creates custom configurations for specific departments, takes snapshots of "golden PC" configurations, performs scheduled OS installations and updates, as well as monitors tasks, according to Xandros product specifications.

xDMS will be demonstrated at LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco next week according to a company spokesperson.

Xandros Desktop standard is available for US $89, Deluxe is available for US $129. Volume discounts are available for enterprises.
