Open Source-based security software maker Astaro has announced the availability of a secure client for Virtual Private Networks (VPN). The Astaro Secure Client combines an advanced IPSec VPN client with a personal firewall, and is said to ensure that email and network communications for remote workers back to the central office is secure.
According to Astaro, the software supports advanced encryption algorithms, authentication methods for use with smart cards, USB tokens and biometric devices, and a variety of popular security and networking protocols including LAN/Ethernet, DSL, modems, and wireless protocols.
Astaro Secure Client is based on technology from German software maker NCP, which supplies software to secure communications over public networks. Claimed to be used by 20,000 worldwide installations, the package is based on software from over 60 Open Source projects combined with proprietary integration and software update services.
The new Astaro Secure Client is priced from US $90 per client. The company has also announced that it will be discontinuing Astaro IPSec Client and that a trade-in program is available for existing customers. Astaro Secure Client is available immediately, and a free trial is available from the company's website.
Astaro announced that it raised $6.7M in a round of funding in May, bringing the total amount invested in the company to $12.9 million.
