Taiwanese Linux mini-distro releases new live CD |
Dec. 11, 2006
The Taiwan-based PUD GNU/Linux project earlier this week released a new version of its Ubuntu-based mini-distribution. The live CD distro is based on a 2.6.15 kernel along with an LXDE desktop environment, rather than the more popular but resource-hungry GNOME or KDE environments, according to project team member Chen Pin-shiun.
Pin-shiun says that PUD (Penk's Underbred Distro) is based on Ubuntu, along with ideas borrowed from the LAMPPIX and Damn Small Linux projects. It supports the English and Chinese (both simplified and traditional) languages.
The goal of PUD is to provide a complete Linux desktop with many popular applications and tools, yet remain small and simple to operate, Pin-shiun said. It does not come bundled with an office suite, but does include PCManFM, a "fast and versatile" file manager.
To conserve on system resources, PUD avoids KDE and GNOME in favor of LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), a new GTK+-based, lightweight and standards-compliant desktop environment designed for older computers and impatient users, Pin-shiun said in the release announcement.
Other key components include: - Firefox 1.5.0.8
- GAIM 1.5.1cvs messenger
- Beep and VLC media players
- GQview image viewer
