SUSE Linux 10.0 Release Candidate 1 is now available for download. Novell describes the five CD download as "an unsupported, open source only, preliminary edition of SUSE Linux that contains bleeding-edge packages and represents the latest development snapshot."
Novell Inc. said earlier this month that it would release the final version of SUSE Linux 10.0 in October. According to Novel, 10.0 includes the newest edition of the Firefox Web browser; the latest version of the MS Office-like OpenOffice.org 2.0 office suite; email and instant messaging clients; graphics creation, editing, and management applications; plus security tools such as spam blockers, anti-virus software, and an integrated firewall. Among the new features are the Beagle desktop search engine and Amarok with MP3 support.
Novell also said that 10.0 will include previews of select "advanced technologies ... such as Xen virtualization and iFolder for file access anywhere," that will be available in future versions of Novell's enterprise Linux products.
In an interview at MozillaQuest.com, Greg Mancusi-Ungaro, Novell's director of marketing for Linux and open source software, discusses the new features included in the 10.0 release.
The "SUSE Linux 10.0 OSS RC1" five CD set can be downloaded here. Versions are available for x86, x86-64, and PowerPC.
