| Microsoft funding of studies raises questions about TCO |

The Seattle Post Intelligence features a special report on Microsoft's use of "independent analyses" in their campaign to influence corporate decision-makers on the merits of the Windows operating system versus open source Linux. Microsoft's "Get the Facts on Windows and Linux." website touts studies from IDC, Meta, Giga, and other firms that clearly label their analyses as "commissioned by" or "paid for" by the Redmond software firm. Such underwriting, accompanied by claims of Windows' "total lower cost of ownership" are not a new tactic in Microsoft's war on open source Linux as the embedded industry experienced in September. However, public perception make some question the results and reinforce that Linux is a real threat to Microsoft.
