May 19, 2006

The amaroK Project shipped a major update of the amaroK "Fast Forward" audio player, v1.4, on May 17. amaroK is a popular audio player/manager for Linux- and Unix-like systems that boasts an easy-to-use collection system, playback via xine and Helix multimedia frameworks, highly controllable playlist management, podcast support, and more.

Touted new features in v1.4 are:
  • Tagging support for all major audio formats (OGG, MP3, MP4, FLAC and RM)
  • Enhanced media device support (iPod IFP/IRiver, generic devices)
  • Reworked tagging dialog for better management of the collection
  • Non-KDE users are now able to set their default browser without installing KDEBase
  • Consistent and independent icon set
  • Gapless playback for the xine engine
  • User-based rating system

The project said in its release announcement that "this is probably the last series before amaroK 2.0, which will be based on Qt 4.x and aims to be released at the same time as KDE 4.0."
