| Zenwalk 4.0 goes gold |
Nov. 20, 2006
The Zenwalk GNU/Linux development team today introduced v4.0 -- its latest major release since v3.0 on Sept. 8 -- featuring a new, stable 2.6.18.1 kernel and the Xfce desktop. This latest version of the France-based distro, designed for i486 architectures, is now available for download.
"The major version number reflects that X11 is updated to version 7.1, which is a structural modification, system wide," the project team wrote in the release announcement. "All X software packages have been recompiled, including a large amount of software in the ZenCommunity repository.
This is the biggest change since the beginning of the Zenwalk project in August 2005, a team spokesperson said. "However, old Zenwalk 3.x and Slackware 11 X-software packages should be compatible with Zenwalk 4.0," a spokesperson said.
"In addition, Netpkg has been updated with a new GTK-based user interface -- a total rewrite of the software to become one of the most advanced and intuitive network package managers," the spokesperson added.
Key software features of Zenwalk 4.0, according to the development team, include: - XFce 4.3.99.2
- GNOME Office
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- Firefox 2.0 browser
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 email client
- Xarchiver 0.4
Zenwalk Linux (formerly Minislack) is a Slackware-based GNU/Linux operating system with a goal of being slim and fast by using only one application per task and with focus on graphical desktop and multimedia usage. Zenwalk features the latest Linux kernel along with a complete programming environment and libraries to provide an ideal platform for application programmers.
The team also claims that Zenwalk's modular approach provides a simple way to convert Zenwalk Linux into a finely-tuned, modern webserver, messaging server, or file server.
