Novell has committed to an early November release of SuSE Professional 9.2, said to add mobility features to the distribution including support for Bluetooth and wireless LANs. SuSE 9.2 will also add a host of new software and enhancements for increased usability, Novell says.
SuSE Linux Professional 9.2 comes with OpenOffice.org 1.1.3, Novell Evolution 2.0 Linux email and personal information client, GIMP 2 image tool, Inkscape vector graphics program, and Nvu, a web authoring system and editing program, according to Novell. The software includes the latest 2.6 Linux kernel enhancements, power management, KDE 3.3 and GNOME 2.6 desktop environments, and now uses the X.Org Foundation's X Window System.
As part of its focus on easing connectivity, Novell says it has also provided enhanced interfaces to make setup of network services like SAMBA, DNS, and DHCP servers. An update to SuSE's venerable central configuration and administration tool, YaST, will enable users to more easily set up Bluetooth and connect to wireless LANs and other network connections, according to the company. Another YaST improvement in SuSE 9.2 is greater security via the distribution's automatic activation of a firewall during installation.
Commercial programs that ship with the distribution include office productivity applications such as Softmaker's office suite. Titles include TextMaker for word processing and Planmaker spreadsheet software. A demo version of MainConcept's video editing software, MainActor 5, is also shipped with the release.
SuSE Linux 9.2 sells for US $90 and comes with 90 days of installation support. An updated edition is available for existing users, and a student edition is priced at US $60. The release supports standard 32-bit PC processors, as well as AMD's Athlon 64 and Intel's Extended Memory 64 Technology.
In May, Novell announced "enterprise-level" support for its line of Linux software including SuSE Linux and Ximian server and desktop products. The following month the company's ZENworks 6.5 was released in an effort to help IT staff consolidate resources and reduce the cost of managing Linux -- as well as other OSs -- in the enterprise. ZENworks Linux Management, formerly Ximian's Red Carpet Enterprise, is said to provide secure, scalable and centralized management of SuSE and Red Hat Linux server and desktop systems, according to Novell. Priced from US $130 per user, the software's public beta had more than 15,000 downloads, according to Novell.
