| Linux thin client vendor joins OSDL, announces support for 2.6 kernel |
Aug. 02, 2004
Linux thin client vendor Wyse has joined the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL). Wyse, which plans to participate in OSDL's Desktop Linux and Data Center Linux working groups, claims to be the only OSDL vendor focused on advancing Linux desktops on thin clients.
In addition to joining the Linux initiative, Wyse is also launching a new thin client terminal based on the latest Linux kernel, 2.6. The new Wyse Winterm 5150SE thin client is based on an AMD Geode GX 533@1.1W processor and runs Wyse's Linux V6 operating system that will be released in Q4 of this year.
Linux thin clients now account for over 20 percent of the current worldwide thin client market in 2003, according to market analyst firm IDC. Mike DeNeffe, Senior Director of the Wyse Winterm business, remarked that "As the fastest growing segment of the thin-client market, Linux thin clients represent a real opportunity to help advance the overall Linux desktop movement to the enterprise."
Wyse and OSDL's Bill Weinberg will jointly lead a session on August 3rd at LinuxWorld in San Francisco, discussing the acceleration and key ingredients of Thin Linux adoption.
Wyse first entered the Linux-based terminal market in July 2003, introducing the $399 Winterm 5125SE and $499 5455XL. The former is a low-end terminal limited to server-based applications, while the latter is a higher-end Java-enabled platform that can run local applications.
