| MEPIS announces enhancement, partnership, expansion |
May 05, 2005
With its bootable LiveCD, five minute install claims, and automatic hardware detection, SimplyMEPIS is considered one of easiest distros by some. MEPIS developer Warren Woodford hopes pending enhancements, a new partnership with Technalign, and forthcoming server and enterprise MEPIS versions will make the disto even easier for even more people.
Although no exact date has been announced, Woodford says SimplyMEPIS enthusiasts can look forward to improved hardware support and "enhanced utilities" within days, through a minor update to be released as SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1.
Woodford has further set MEPIS's sites on SOHO (small office / home office) and business users, aiming to release SimplyServer, BusMEPIS Desktop, and BusMEPIS -- all expected to become available this June.
"SimplyMEPIS has struck a chord with users looking for an easy way to move from Windows to Linux," says Woodford. "We intend to give SOHO and business computer users and administrators an equally easy way to convert to MEPIS."
MEPIS products will become easier to get, too, thanks to a partnership with Technalign, announced yesterday, through which Technalign will manufacture and distribute boxed MEPIS products, bundling them with other applications such as Win4Lin.
"With Technalign manufacturing and marketing MEPIS based products, we can spend more time improving MEPIS and developing new products," Woodford says, explaining the benefits of the new alliance. "Often, new users will be able to buy MEPIS at a local store. Some stores will sell computers with MEPIS pre-installed."
MEPIS Linux products are now available at Technalign's online store with a limited-time 40 percent off MSRP discount, according to Woodford.
Further details about MEPIS, its new alliance with Technalign, and what's on the horizon are available on the MEPIS website.
