SAM Linux revs up
Sep. 26, 2006

A new version of the PCLinuxOS-based SAM Linux Desktop was released on Sept. 25. SAM 2006-3 includes a 2.6.16.27 kernel and the XFce 4.3.90.2 desktop, and comes as a combination live and installation CD.

SAM 2006-3 is touted as a complete desktop environment that is suitable for older hardware. "With more than 1,000 packages, it's smaller than the previous version, but still contains many excellent features," the project team said in the release announcement.

Key new features, according to the project team, include:
  • full support for English and German languages
  • OpenOffice.org 2.0.3; supports GNOME Office
  • GAIM 2.0.0 beta3
  • a new "welcome" dialog introduces users to the usage of the desktop and gives direct access to the Internet connection wizard and installation tool
  • a new installation tool -- an enhanced version of Mandriva's Drakelive Install -- speeds up the installation time -- even on older systems
Standard features include:
  • GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
  • Mplayer 1.0 music player
  • Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 email client
  • Firefox 1.5.0.4 browser
Germany-based SAM Linux Desktop is described as an easy-to-use, fast, and clean XFce-based Linux desktop for home users. The distribution is enhanced by several popular non-free applications, such as Macromedia Flash plugin, Java, and RealPlayer.
