| Novell to release SUSE Linux 10.0 in October |
Sep. 08, 2005
Novell Inc. announced Wednesday that it will release SUSE Linux 10.0, the result of its new OpenSUSE project, in early October. Novell introduced the community-based distribution -- which uses as a foundation the company's commercial SUSE Linux Pro operating system -- at LinuxWorld in August.
The new distro is modeled after Red Hat's highly successful Fedora Project, which debuted last year. SUSE Linux 10.0 is intended to serve as a cutting-edge Linux distribution for enthusiasts, while at the same time providing easy-to-use KDE and GNOME windowing interfaces for less-experienced desktop users, the company said.
A community website has been up and running for a few weeks.
SUSE Linux 10.0 includes the newest edition of the Firefox Web browser; the latest version of the MS Office-like OpenOffice.org 2.0 office suite; email and instant messaging clients; graphics creation, editing, and management applications; plus security tools such as spam blockers, anti-virus software, and an integrated firewall. Among the new features are the Beagle desktop search engine and Amarok with MP3 support.
Novell said that SUSE Linux 10.0 will include previews of select "advanced technologies ... such as Xen virtualization and iFolder for file access anywhere," that will be available in future versions of Novell's enterprise Linux products.
Availability
SUSE Linux 10.0 will be offered at $59 (and also 59 Euros), the company said. For purchase information, go here.
