Aug. 05, 2003
Sun Microsystems has declared the Linux desktop ready for primetime as they unveiled their open source-based desktop environment known as Project Mad Hatter at Linux World in San Francisco today. The project targets enterprises looking to drive down the costs of their desktop computing environments, says Sun.
Project Mad Hatter offers a secure, low cost alternative for Linux and Solaris and offers all 'necessary' desktop applications according to Sun. The release includes a new version of StarOffice, the latest version of Sun's Java technology, GNOME UI, Evolution mail and calendaring, as well as Gaim instant messager. Project Mad Hatter offers interoperability with Microsoft Office and Exchange, Lotus Notes productivity and communications tools and the enhanced security and authentication services of Java Card and the Sun ONE stack.
Sun also demonstrated their Java 3D desktop technology that breaks new ground in the way users will interact with their desktops.
"We have already seen significant opportunities in the government, military, education and vertical market areas such as call centers and retail banking," said Curtis Sasaki, vice president of engineering, desktop solutions, Sun Microsystems.
