| Third SimplyMEPIS 6.5 release candidate adds Beryl |
Mar. 23, 2007
SimplyMEPIS 6.5 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) today was uploaded to the MEPIS subscribers' pool and propagated to the public mirrors -- only nine days after RC2 was released. It features a 2.6.15 kernel, a KDE default desktop, and Beryl 0.2.0 Final.
Beryl in action (Click to enlarge) | Beryl is a combined window manager and composite manager that uses OpenGL to provide acceleration. It is designed to be highly flexible, extensible, and portable, according to the project. Distro creator/chief maintainer Warren Woodford had earlier said he was waiting for the final release of Beryl 0.2.0 to incorporate it into the SimplyMEPIS pre-release iso, and that time appears to be now.
RC3 also includes AmaRok 1.4.4.4 media player, translations for the MEPIS Installer, and an improvement for bcm43xx driver support, Woodford said in a statement.
"We discovered that some users were confused about whether to use the bcm43xx driver or ndiswrapper," Woodford explained. "Also there are conflicting instructions online at other sites. So I added an option in the MEPIS Network Asssitant to easily set the configuration variables to the settings that are most likely to work. The MEPIS Documentation Team has updated the detailed info at the MEPIS Wiki to fully explain the options for using MEPIS and Linux with Broadcom wireless."
AmaRok has been updated due to user requests, Woodford said, and is now fully compatible with the 6.0 foundation used by the MEPIS 6.x series of releases. "AmaRok 1.4.4.4 also integrates with the acclaimed Magnatune Music Store," Woodford said. "This update is in the MEPIS 6.5 pools and should work equally well for MEPIS and Ubuntu Dapper users."
MEPIS has begun a new internationalization initiative, according to Woodford. "So far, the MEPIS Translation Team has provided German, Spanish, French, Dutch, and Brazilian Portuguese translations for the MEPIS Installer. These are included in RC3," he said.
This may be the last RC release, and MEPIS 6.5 is expected to be final within a week, Woodford said.
i386 and amd64 ISO images of RC3 are available in the "testing" subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscribers' site and at the MEPIS public mirrors.
SimplyMEPIS is an easy-to-use live CD/DVD edition that installs or runs right from the disk. The bootable DVD edition features more than 1,900 packages. The latest release is an Ubuntu-based distro that uses the Dapper LTS package pool and the KDE desktop as a default.
In addition to being available as a free download, it can be purchased at the MEPIS store, where satisfied users of the free download are also encouraged to make contributions.
