| Zenwalk revs up to 2.4 |
Apr. 06, 2006
Zenwalk Linux Tuesday released a new edition of its Slackware-based operating system, Zenwalk Linux v2.4. It sports a brand-new 2.6.16.1 kernel and the latest udev, which provides improved support for hotplugging devices, and releasing nearly 130 updated packages, the project said.
"Now that the transition to a full udev is complete, we were also able to remove the discover service," the France-based project team wrote in the release announcement. "The changes were not limited to the base system, though; with the 2.4 [release], a series of updated packages will be released (nearly 130 packages)."
The team has replaced two of the standard Zenwalk packages. Gnomebaker and Xarchiver -- the CD/DVD burner and archive manager apps, respectively -- replace Graveman and File-Roller, it said.
Other key new features outlined by the project team are:- XFce 4.3.0 desktop
- GNOME Office
- GIMP 2.2.10
- Firefox 1.5.0.1
- Thunderbird 1.5 mail client
Zenwalk Linux (formerly Minislack) is a Slackware-based Linux distribution that focuses on Internet applications, multimedia, and programming tools. It is a complete system with software for Internet browsing, mail, chat, multimedia and office, as well as for programming in C, Perl, Python, and Ruby, according to the project.
The main objectives of Zenwalk Linux, the team said, are to be simple and fast, provide one application per task, be a complete development and desktop environment, and be small enough to fit on a 400MB iso image.
There are two versions of Zenwalk. The full edition (420 MB iso download) is a complete system. Users can browse, mail, chat, listen to music, program in C, Perl, Python, Ruby, watch videos in various formats, write documents, print, scan, burn CDs and DVDs, and connect a camera/edit photographs without adding anything, the team said.
Zenwalk Core (350 MB iso download) is a Zenwalk system without X applications. Zenwalk Core is intended to be used as a starting point to build a custom desktop system or a server system, and for users with limited space on their disk, the project said.
