Mar. 08, 2006
The first stable version of Rubix Linux 1.0, a distribution that combines a Slackware core, the KDE desktop, and Arch Linux's "pacman" package management software, was released Tuesday. It also has a revamped init system that maintains the BSD style but adds modularity, project team leader Joshua Rubin said.
Rubix Linux, which comes with kernel versions 2.6.15.5, 2.4.32, and 2.4.32-grsec, is well-suited to serve in both desktop and server roles, Rubin said.
Rubix has exceptional hardware detection, with udev replacing hotplug for 2.6 kernels and the latest KDE desktop version 3.5.1, he added. Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 and Thunderbird 1.5 are now the default web browser and email client.
Other key features, according to the Rubix website, include:- Office packages: OpenOffice.org 2.0; KOffice 1.4.2
- Gaim 1.5.0
- Gimp 2.2.10
- xfce 4.2.3.2
- glibc 2.3.6 with NPTL support
- Xorg 6.9.0
- gcc 3.4.4 with SSP
Rubix Linux also supports the best modern file systems, including ext2, ext3, JFS, XFS, ReiserFS and now Reiser4 (with 2.6 kernels) from installation, the team added.
