| Kate OS Linux rev adds graphical package manager |
Dec. 28, 2006
The KateOS project team, which maintains a full-featured Linux distribution derived from Slackware Linux, last week released an installation version. KateOS version 3.2 features a 2.6.18 kernel, Xfce as its default desktop, and native support for the KDE and GNOME desktop environments.
The latest release also boasts a new graphical package management tool, KatePKG, said to enable easy and intuitive installation, removal, and updating of packages. KatePKG can handle any number of repositories, including user-created ones on the local drive; in addition, it was written in PHP using the PHP-GTK2 library, according to the project team.
Kate OS 3.2 uses glibc library 2.5, which ensures binary compatibility with future editions, the team said.
The new release also includes, according to the team:- Xfce environment version 4.4RC2
- GNOME 2.16.2 desktop
- KDE 3.5.5 desktop
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 office suite
- Firefox 2.0 browser
- GAIM 1.5.0 messenger
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
You can obtain the 2.3 GB DVD iso for i386 machines from the general download site, or directly from the FTP site here (link to iso file). You can download CD images via BitTorrent, here.
