| Xandros joins OSDL and its Desktop Linux working group |
Aug. 09, 2006
Desktop Linux specialist Xandros announced Aug. 8 that it is joining the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), and will participate in OSDL's Desktop Linux working group. IDC, meanwhile, expects desktop Linux to will make substantial gains over the next several years, accounting for $10 billion in annual revenues by 2008, OSDL said.
Xandros, whose latest product is Xandros 4 Home Edition Premium, becomes the 20th Linux-related company to join the working group. Some of the more prominent members are IBM, Novell, HP, AMD, Intel, Red Hat, Red Flag, Siemens AG, Turbolinux, Trolltech, and NTT Data.
With more than 200 current Linux distros now available, a substantial amount of standards work needs to be done, OSDL said.
"Desktop Linux still has some hurdles to overcome but momentum, interest and market opportunities are starting to intersect," said Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL. "Xandros brings another level of understanding of the opportunities and requirements for desktop Linux, which will lead to increased adoption of Linux and new revenues for Linux vendors -- especially in regions outside the U.S."
OSDL's initiatives bring Linux reps to one "table" to identify challenges and to execute on collective solutions, an OSDL spokesman said. OSDL sponsors four technical working groups: Desktop Linux, Carrier Grade Linux, Mobile Linux, and Data Center Linux.
Other desktop Linux-oriented OSDL initiatives include efforts around printing, wireless networking, and power management, as well as the activities of the Portland Group, which last spring announced the first set of common interfaces for the GNOME and KDE Linux desktops.
