| A Windows-like install for Hardy Heron |
May 01, 2008
In his latest "Perfect Desktop" post, Falko Timme has published a tutorial on setting up a Windows-esque desktop using the new Ubuntu 8.04 ("Hardy Heron") release. The five-page, illustrated HowToForge article covers the Kubuntu version of the 8.04 release.
Ubuntu 8.04 arrived only last week, but an install tutorial has already been published by Rick Lehrbaum at embedded blog site DeviceGuru. Whereas Lehrbaum installs Kubuntu 8.04 in dual-boot mode with Windows Vista, Timme attempts to duplicate the Windows XP experience in Linux, the better to please Linux newbies and mixed-OS offices.
Timme starts off with basic installation procedures, including partitioning the hard drive, and then shows how to check for updates and configure repositories. On page 3, he moves on to installing the Synaptic Package Manager, and on page 4 shows how to install Flash, True Type fonts, and Google Picasa. He finishes up with a discussion of installing VMware for Linux for those users who want to access their old Windows desktops. He also presents a patch for a common VMware installation abort that may occur during the building of the vmmon module.
The complete HowToForge article, called "The Perfect Desktop - Kubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)," should be available here.
