Linux thin-client partnership targets enterprise
Apr. 01, 2004

Embedded hardware specialist VIA will partner with thin client software vendor Neoware Systems on embedded Linux network appliances targeting enterprise customers. The appliances will run a thin-client embedded Linux implementation that Neoware is expected to announce next Monday.

Neoware's partnership with VIA will also include research and development of new PC-alternative technologies, it says. According to Neoware, the thin client market is poised to grow faster than the PC market, due to advantages in security, manageability, reliability, and cost.

Neoware CEO Michael Kantrowitz said, "VIA's long term commitment to the embedded market will enable Neoware to continue to deliver thin client appliance products with greater reliability, security and manageability, together with superior performance."

VIA's latest processors integrate advanced security features supported by GPL software contributed by VIA. Neoware says its products are designed to run local applications for specific vertical markets, plus allow access across a network to multi-user Linux servers, Windows servers, mainframes, minicomputers, and the Internet.
