Japan's Vine Linux project team, whose distribution features an integrated Japanese or English environment for desktop PCs and notebooks, today released its version 4.0 for i386 and PowerPC processors. The distro features a 2.6.16 kernel and the GNOME 2.14.2 desktop environment.
Project Vine was founded by six members of the Project Japanese Extension in 1998, and the team has been developing Vine Linux ever since with help of volunteers.
Key new updates, as listed by the team, include:- kernel 2.6.16.29 contains many driver updates and backports; system components include X.Org X11R6.9.0 with backported drivers plus updated ATI, NVIDIA and Intel drivers
- GNOME 2.14.2 includes GTK+ 2.8 and glib 2.12; GNOME/GTK+ theme changed to a better-looking Vine Linux theme
- Firefox 2.0 (custom build for Vine Linux)
- Anthy is now included in place of Canna, SCIM, and kinput2
- default Japanese fonts -- VL Gothic Font family is included as a default font for user interface, TeX and printing
- movie player Totem and music player BMP (Beep Media Player) added
Standard Vine Linux features, according to the team, include:- Firefox 2.0 browser
- GIMP 2.12 graphics editor
- GAIM 2.0 Beta 3 messenger
The distribution does not include a bundled office suite.
Vine Seed, the development version of Vine Linux, is a public software repository, to which all developers are welcome to contribute.
Kanji support is available out of the box throughout most applications, and Japanese input support is provided by either the FreeWnn (or Wnn6 in the Commercial CR version) or the Canna input server, the team said in the release announcement.
