| Lindows suspends operations in the Netherlands |
Mar. 14, 2004
Lindows.com has discontinued the availability of its products and suspended operations in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg following a court filing in the region. Microsoft Corporation has asked an Amsterdam court to fine Lindows 100,000 euros per day (almost US $125,000) for permitting its website to be accessible to users in those countries.
The San Diego-based Linux OS company had attempted to circument a ruling against them in the region by launching a website called the "Lin---s" program (pronounced LinDash). Launched in response an earlier Dutch order to prohibit sales in the region, the program offered residents of the Netherlands "the same choices that are currently available to the citizens of more than one hundred countries around the world. LinDash ensures that the Netherlands will have affordable, virus-free options instead of just expensive Microsoft software," according to Lindows.com's CEO Michael Robertson on the program website.
Lindows.com announced the suspension of their business in the region late Friday.
