| A "puplet" for all seasons |
Mar. 10, 2009
This article describes Puppy Linux, a flexible, fast distribution that's always a favorite among DesktopLinux readers. Author Dave Dibble briefly reviews MiPup2, one of many ready-made Puppy "puplets," and updates us on Puppy's current state and planned new features.
As background, "puplets" are custom builds of Puppy that are shared with the Puppy community. Some, like "TeenPup," apparently take hundreds of hours to create. Others, like "Muppy," have been years in the making!
Dibble first describes Puppy in broad terms, before delving into a review of MiPup2. This puplet offers a more full-featured office suite, along with the more configurable IceWM window manager and wbar dock. Other extras include the Gimp, Wine, Audacity, GNU Chess, and many other popular desktop applications.
Other topics covered include:- Adding development tools, building software, and then cleanly removing the tools
- Puppy's solution for system-wide backups
- Puppy's memory requirements (currently 256MB for in-memory filesystems)
- Tools for customizing and installing Puppy
- A few of the features planned for Puppy 4.2
