| Open source companies see stronger revenues with 'mixed' business model |

Turns out you can make money giving away software, as long as you don't give "too much of it" away, reports CNET. A panel at the Software and Information Industry Association's Enterprise Software Summit in San Francisco this week focused on making a business with open source Linux.
Said Matt Asay, director of Novell's Linux business office, "A lot of people talk about open-source versus commercial, but they're not mutually exclusive . . . Open source behaves nicely with proprietary software." His advice to others? "Figure out the right mix for your business."
The panel also included Zack Urlocker, vice president of marketing for MySQL and IBM's program manager for open-source strategy Steve Gerdt. Both discuss their company's approach to open source as a business.
