| Database developers and administrators gain tool for Linux enterprises |
Jun. 07, 2004
Database tool vendor AquaFold today announced the availability of its latest version of Aqua Data Studio. The software gives database administrators a single interface to all major relational databases and allows them to service heterogeneous database environments, a growing concern for database developers and administrators managing enterprise systems today.
"AquaFold's customer base is about 10 - 15 percent Linux," says president Niels Gron. He adds, "We enable companies to migrate among operating systems on their own terms -- database administrators can use our tool across all platforms and move a department or group of departments to Linux, using a single common interface."
AquaFold says that major database vendors have embraced Linux for their database server products, but it is the current lack of support for database administration and query tools for Linux desktop users that has been forcing users to continue to use Microsoft Windows to administer their Linux database servers. AquaFold says it fixes this problem with tools that work on Linux to address the growing number for higher quality desktop tools.
The Mountain View, CA company's new release introduces the ability to visually create and alter database schema objects, including storage objects for databases. Using the new "visual explain plan," database developers and administrators can now create explain plans and generate diagrams to quickly understand and analyze the operations of any query to optimize speed and performance, according to the company’s website. Schema extraction has improved to now provide the ability to extract definitions of any database object including security and storage objects. This gives users quick access to the SQL definition for any administration task.
Aqua Data Studio supports all major operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX, Solaris, and Linux. The new tool imports data into any database from different data sources and adds database support for Oracle 10g, PostgreSQL 7.4, and MySQL 4.0, with this release. The software was developed with the Java programming language.
The software is available for download. The complete feature list is here. Aqua Data Studio licenses for personal and educational use are free, with a commercial license of US $89 per user.
