"Intrepid Ibex" plucks up courage for alpha release |
Jun. 30, 2008
The next release of Ubuntu Linux began alpha testing today, about three weeks late. Destined to ship in five months as Ubuntu 8.10, "Intrepid Ibex" reportedly folds in changes from the upstream Debian Linux project, and moves to a pre-release version of the Linux 2.6.26 kernel.
Intrepidness aside, the Ibex was originally scheduled to appear on Jun. 12th. However, developer attention to the 8.04 point release, among other issues, caused delays, according to a post on that date to the Ubuntu-devel-announce list by Steve Langasek, Ubuntu project release manager.
Then, today, Langasek loosed the Ibex, in a post that began with a quote from the San Diego Zoo website: Once the baby is strong enough to follow its mother, the pair joins other mothers and babies. The youngsters become independent quickly. An ibex kid can jump on its first day of life, and it joins kid groups by the fourth week. Even at an early age, lambs and kids are agile and alert. Although they are weaned by four to six months of age, they remain with their mothers for at least a year. Langasek went on to describe the release as "reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Intrepid." He added, "The primary changes from Hardy have been the re-merging of changes from Debian, and the upgrade of the Linux kernel to a pre-release version of 2.6.26."
The Ibex appears initially in server form, and as an "alternate" image suitable for use by OEMs working on pre-install images. Current and future Ibex releases should be available for download here.
