Red Hat targets enterpises with Unisys partnership, enhanced security
Sep. 07, 2004

Red Hat today announced a partnership with Unisys, and the availability of security updates to its Enterprise Linux offering. Through the partnership, Red Hat and Unisys will offer an integrated Linux platform for their joint enterprise customers and target the datacenter, the companies say. Other partnership activities are said to include joint marketing, customer support, training, and the development of an open-source roadmap.

Unisys is developing an ecosystem around Intel-based platforms capable of supporting enterprise data centers.

Mike Evans, vice president of Partner Development at Red Hat, said that the two companies are "committed to making ES7000 a platform of choice for the Linux operating environment in the enterprise data center."

The first Unisys server solutions for Red Hat Enterprise Linux are available now.

Enterpise Linux update targets enhanced security

Red Hat also said that its just-announced security upgrade, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3, significantly reduces the ability of hackers to compromise software code for enterprise customers.

The update includes:Exec-shield and PIE (Position Independent Executable) features, which provide protection against stack, buffer or function pointer overflows, and against other types of security exploits that rely on overwriting data structures in memory.
  • NX (No Execute) support has been extended from the Intel Itanium 2 processer to include Intel x86, Intel EM64T and AMD64 processors. NX technology restricts execution of program code in specific areas of memory such as the stack or the heap, preventing many common buffer overflow security vulnerabilities.
  • Support for IBM's POWER5 servers, new drivers, and bug fixes. Originally planned for release in 2005, the update is available now to subscribers of Red Hat Network -- several months ahead of schedule, Red Hat says.
