| Sendmail releases authentication technology, launches beta program |
Aug. 31, 2004
Sendmail Inc. has released a module for its email server that verifies the source of messages and helps Internet users block unwanted mail. The company has released its mail filter based on the "milter" Sender ID protocol as an open source plugin to the sendmail MTA, which is widely regarded as the dominant mail routing platform on the Internet. Coincident with the launch of the new technology, Sendmail issued a call for beta testers.
The Sender ID protocol combines the standards-based Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and Microsoft's Caller ID for Email. It is being developed by MARID (MTA Authorization Records In DNS), an IETF working group. According to Sendmail, it is designed to combat email fraud, such as phishing and spoofing, and spam.
The release is part of Sendmail's Messaging Integrity Pilot Program that the company says will accelerate the development and deployment of sender authentication technologies.
Additional information about the beta program is available here. Prospective beta testers are asked whether they use Red Hat or SuSE Linux as part of the registration process.
