| Thunderbird email client goes gold |
Dec. 07, 2004
Version 1.0 of the Mozilla Thunderbird email client is finally available for download, according to an announcement from the Mozilla Foundation. The group, which develops the email client as an open source project, says Thunderbird is aimed at advanced email users, and that it competes favorably with Microsoft's Outlook Express and Qualcomm's Eudora email clients.
Popular features of the next-generation email client include improved quick search features, integrated RSS-feeds, "live" bookmarks, a trainable junk filter, and an easy migration path from other email clients, according to the Mozilla Foundation.
OSDir has published a screenshot slideshow of Thunderbird 1.0, which can be viewed here.
Derived from technology in the venerable Netscape Messenger 4.x email client and the current-generation Mozilla email engine, Thunderbird boasts security advantages over other email systems. Due to the use of Netscape and Mozilla technology, Thunderbird is also said to be free of the many bugs that commonly plague users of Microsoft's Outlook email clients.
The Mozilla Foundation debuted a "release candidate" of Mozilla 1.0 last week, claiming a long list of enhancements.
Version 1.0 of the Mozilla project's companion browser, Firefox, was released last month, and now boasts over 1 million downloads, the Mozilla Foundation says.
