Puppy Linux arrives at v2.0
Jun. 01, 2006

Puppy Linux turned "2" on June 1 -- reaching the milestone version 2.0. Puppy Linux 2.0 sports an upgraded 2.6.16.7 kernel and the JWM desktop environment. The live CD iso file weighs in at an even 70 MB, up from 62.1 MB in v1.0.9. Smaller iso files, such as the "BareBones Puppy," will be released very soon, the team said.

"This is a major upgrade from the 1.xx series," the project team said in the release announcement. "How to summarize five months' work? The graphical user interface is much the same, as most work has been on the underlying architecture. In a nutshell, the fundamental architecture and boot-up/shutdown scripts are a total rewrite, from scratch, no relationship to any other distro."

Among other major changes, the standard edition of Puppy Linux now supplies the SeaMonkey 1.0 web suite for browsing and email, Inkscape for vector drawing, and GParted for disk partitioning tasks.

More improvements, according to the team, are:
  • Geany text editor replaces the aging Beaver.
  • "Standard" live CD now has Perl, v5.8.0.
  • new little applets for the taskbar, to display free memory, volume control, network status
  • considerably more automatic hardware detection, with loading of the correct kernel modules
Standard features in v 2.00, as listed by the Puppy project team, include:
  • Firefox 1.5.0.3 browser
  • XDG dynamically generated menus, portable for use in multiple window managers and ready for internationalization
  • Leafpad 0.8.9 (text editor)
  • Sylpheed 2.2.4 (email client)
  • JWM 1.7 with Blinky 0.8 and miniXcal 1.1
  • improved integration of ROX2.4.1 as an optional package
Australia-based Puppy's most redeeming feature is that it has a small footprint yet is full-featured, including all sorts of configuration and application installation wizards. The whole OS is small enough to run directly from system RAM. The result is that all applications start quickly and respond to user input instantly. Another advantage is that Puppy can often be a great choice for older, under-powered hardware.
