May 20, 2003
NeTraverse today announced immediate availability of the latest version of the award winning Win4Lin Workstation product. Version 5.0 extends the ability of Win4Lin to help users painlessly bridge from legacy Windows environments to Linux.
Win4Lin runs a copy of Windows as a Linux process, using shared memory and utilizes the Linux caching and other host services. Combining the native Linux environment and host together brings Windows compatibility and support for a wide range of Windows applications, according to NeTraverse. Win4Lin provides an environment to run Microsoft products such as Office and Internet Explorer and third party Windows applications like Peoplesoft, SAP, and Seibel clients and custom Visual Basic and C++ applications without modification.
Version 5.0 extends the Win4Lin capabilities by including a Novell client with support for authenticated connections, basic DirectX support for programs like Real Player and Media Player, Winsock 2 capabilities to increase the integration of Windows networking resources under a single Linux IP address, and enhanced sound support, are listed among upgrades.
