RealPlayer 10 for Linux, based on the open source Helix multimedia player, has reached gold status and is now available for free download. RealPlayer 10 is currently the second-most popular desktop media player, behind Windows Media Player, according to IDC.
RealPlayer 10 supports RealAudio, RealVideo 10, MP3, Ogg Vorbis and Theora, H263 and others. RealPlayer 10 also enables accelerated video, and full screen playback, among other features, according to RealNetworks Inc.
The Mozilla-compatible plug-in allows listeners to watch and listen to embedded video directly from their Web browsers, without needing to open up the player. Additionally, a new user interface design enables users to adopt the theme they have chosen for their desktops, and the media player blends itself accordingly, RealPlayer said.
"I've added it to my full Knoppix HD installation using Firefox 1.5rc2. Now I can listen to NPR broadcasts," reported one of our readers.
Not without flaws
Last Thursday, RealNetworks shipped a major security update for RealPlayer to patch a pair of remote code execution vulnerabilities in earlier versions. The security holes could be exploited by malicious hackers to take complete control over a vulnerable machine.

The current downloads now include the new security updates, the company said. If you still think you might need the patches, they are located here.
