| Vector Linux rolls version 5.1 standard edition |
Jul. 30, 2005
The latest spin of Vector Linux out, version 5.1 Standard Edition, is now available for download from the project's ftp site and various mirrors. "We have tested this release long and hard under the guise of 5.0 with two betas and two release candidates," says the project. "We think you will find this a fast, easy to install and very robust operating system that can be used on older hardware and new as well."
Slackware forms the core of Vector Linux, which "brings many things to the table that a modern desktop should have," adds the project team. Key enhancements, according to the project, include the latest 2.6.x Linux kernel, automatic hardware configuration, automounting of USB devices; and a first for Slackware -- "real package management" with dependency checking via the "slapt-get" and "Gslapt-gui" system.
Vector Linux boasts three light weight window managers -- IceWM, Xfce4, and fluxbox -- plus "best of breed support programs for productivity in most every aspect of your computing needs," the project's announcement continues.
In addition to the standard edition, a deluxe version, available from the online Vector Linux CD store, adds KDE, openoffice, and FreeRock Gnome (as a bonus CD) to the offering. Also, Vector Linux packages of the "latest and gorgeous" enlightenment are available.
