| Red Hat-sponsored Fedora Project launches |
Sep. 23, 2003
Red Hat has teamed up with Fedora Linux to launch the Fedora Project. This project, sponsored by Red Hat is a "proving ground for new technology that may eventually make its way into Red Hat products." The Fedora Project is community-supported open source project.
According to the website, the goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software. Development will be done in a public forum.
The project hosts a Desktop subproject, that includes the X Window System and other shared platform/infrastructure, the "desktop shell" (GNOME, KDE, or "twm classic" for example), and applications. The Desktop project is led by Havoc Pennington, who also heads up freedesktop.org.
