Opinion -- Still can't get enough of SUSE 10.1? Well, we can't either. Over at our sister publication, eWEEK, Jason Brooks takes 10.1 out on a spin, but finds, just like I did, that the new software and management tool is awful.
How bad? It's "sucks dead gophers through rusty tail pipes" bad.
Novell and SUSE tell me that it's going to be better real soon now.
At this point, though, I really wish they'd just switch back to SUSE 9 and 10's YaST Online Update (YOU) and postpone this "improvement," which was based on Ximian's old Red Carpet program, for the next version.
In the meantime, both Jason and I think that the Smart Package Manager is the way to go. You can install Smart from your SUSE 10.1 discs. You'll be glad you did.
Other than that, I've been using OpenSUSE 10.1 for several weeks now, on both my main Linux desktop and laptop, and I'm very happy with it on both platforms.
For even more on all things SUSE, you can listen to me chatter about my first experiences in my podcast on 10.1, "OpenSUSE 10.1: Almost Great," and Jason and eWEEK Labs Director Jim Rapoza talk about it in their podcast, "OpenSUSE 10.1 is Worthy."
Enjoy.
