Subscribers to Yellow Dog Linux's enhanced online service now have access to the latest release candidate for Terra Soft’s Linux desktop for PowerPC-based PCs. The upcoming 4.0 release of Yellow Dog is based on Red Hat Fedora and will have a unified Gnome and KDE interface, graphical installer, built-in hardware detection, on-screen help, flexible package selection, multiple ethernet and wireless port configurations, and automated partition creation. It is based on the 2.6 Linux kernel.
Applications announced as part of Yellow Dog Linux 4.0 include OpenOffice.org 1.1.1, Rhythmbox 0.8.3, and Mozilla 1.6. The unified desktop supports KDE 3.2.1 and GNOME 2.6.0 and the release utilizes the Anaconda installer engine. Screenshots of the new software are available here.
YDL.net membership offers email, early access
Tera Soft's YDL.net online community for Yellow Dog Linux offers users webmail and access to the latest versions of Yellow Dog. Several levels of membership are offered, including enhanced, professional, and basic level subscriptions.
A forthcoming "Pro" YDL account will offer exclusive access to Y-HPC, Terra Soft's 64-bit Linux OS for high performance computing on Apple G5s, IBM BladeCenter JS20, and Momentum 970 evaluation boards. Fedora-based Y-HPC is an RPM-based, 64-bit operating system for high performance computing, that is available pre-installed on Apple, IBM, and Momentum Computers, via DVD as a developers license, and a bootable FireWire drive for rapid cluster builds.
