| Mandriva packs 3D desktop into USB key |
Feb. 09, 2007
Mandriva on Feb. 7 introduced a pre-installed Mandriva Linux 2007 distribution on a 2GB USB key. With "Mandriva Flash," users can take their own Mandriva system anywhere with them, plug in the key, and save and exchange data -- with about 1GB of space left over, according to the company.
Mandriva 2007 is based on a 2.6.17 Linux kernel. It uses KDE as a default desktop, but also supports both the GNOME and Xfce environments. Mandriva Flash includes a generous selection of desktop software, including browsers, email and messaging clients, office productivity suites, graphics and multimedia apps, and more.
As with a live CD, there is no need to install anything on the hard disk, no fear of conflicting with the other operating system, no need to format or repartition anything, and no documentation to deal with, Mandriva said. The company notes, however, that booting and loading the OS from the flash key is much faster than with live CDs, thanks to key's USB 2.0 support. Additionally, because the key is writable, users can store personal data to the key, and system configuration, preferences, and data are all saved to the key.
Mandriva Flash contains a complete Linux desktop. Users can save documents and preferences on the key and use all their favorite Internet, multimedia and office applications. Users can even install new software and download updates, just like a normal Linux installation, according to the company.
As with the recently released 3D Metisse live CD, Mandriva Flash includes the Metisse window manager from the In Situ project, which boasts the AIGLX and Xgl 3D-accelerated desktop. As a result, Mandriva Flash can transform a PC into a 3D desktop, complete with animations and effects. 3D-related features are said to include:- advanced hardware detection
- fine tuning of all the latest 3D technologies
- special effects to change the look of workspaces
Another touted strength of Mandriva Flash is a large hardware database and a easy network configuration via drakconnect, enabling the use of various communications methods, including LAN, DSL, WiFi, and cellular (3G, GPRS), Mandriva said.
Mandriva Flash comes with a five-year warranty, a neck strap, one month's worth of Mandriva web support, and a one-month trial membership in the Mandriva Silver Level Club. It is priced at $86, and available from Mandriva's online store.

Larger flash sizes (4GB, 8GB, etc.) are expected to be made available over time.
