| Novell, Dell bring SUSE Linux desktops to China |
Nov. 12, 2007
Promises made are promises kept. Novell announced at August's LinuxWorld in San Francisco that it would be bringing SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Service Pack 1 to Chinese users, and that day is almost here.
In a blog posting, Kevan Barney, a Novell spokesperson, announced that SLED systems preinstalled on Dell OptiPlex 330 and 755 commercial desktop PCs will be available later this year.
According to Francis Kam, marketing director for Dell, "In the past few years, more and more users have begun to pay attention to the good value, ease of use and safety of Linux. We cooperated with Novell to launch computers with the preinstalled SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 operating system to better meet user demand.
"This development is part of Dell's ongoing efforts to give customers more choices and to meet increasing demand for security, dependability and lower TCO [total cost of ownership] provided by Linux," Kam continued.
In recent weeks, there have been unfounded rumors that Dell would no longer be supporting Linux on its main desktop and laptop lines. There is no truth to the rumors.
In a Dell blog, Lionel Menchaca, Dell's digital media manager, explained, "What really happened? For a short time yesterday, the link to the Inspiron 6400n was broken on the Dell UK Ubuntu page. That broken link was fixed early this morning, so UK customers can go here to order an Inspiron 6400n with Ubuntu."
Other sources at Dell confirmed that Dell is committed to preinstalling SLED and Ubuntu Linux on its popular laptop and desktop lines for the foreseeable future.
