| Scalix messaging platform selected for government Linux deployments |
Jun. 01, 2004
Scalix Corporation has announced that the city of Bloomington, Indiana and the county of Pottawattamie, Iowa have deployed the Scalix messaging system for Linux. Both government programs had previously adopted a Linux infrastructure and were looking to migrate their email and messaging systems.
Bloomington, Indiana had already experienced significant performance and cost saving benefits by using Linux, and sought to enhance its messaging infrastructure with calendaring and scheduling, shared folders, and web access from remote locations. Said Greg Volan, Bloomington's CIO, "We were looking for a cost-effective Linux-based messaging system that offered rich support for Microsoft Outlook and would integrate with the infrastructure investments we have already made."
Pottawattamie County's director of IT, Thomas Broniecki, said on his agency's migration, "Scalix replaces a proprietary messaging solution that posed a security threat and required significant IT effort to keep it running. Scalix fit well with our existing IT infrastructure, was easy to manage and addressed our security issues. Better still, we've quickly and inexpensively upgraded our email and calendaring services in a manner that was not noticeable to our users."
San Mateo, CA-based Scalix offers an email and calendaring platform for Linux based on Open Systems Architecture (OSA), web services, and open source technology. Scalix says its messaging system is fully compatible with Microsoft Outlook and other desktop email clients, and that it can be introduced into existing infrastructures without end user disruption. The platform scales across organizations for enterprises of all sizes without costly licensing and vendor lock-in imposed with proprietary solutions. Scalix licensed HP's Open Mail software.
