New Website Launches Desktop Linux Revolution
Nov. 19, 2001

[Updated 10:30am, Nov. 19, 2001]   Palo Alto, CA -- (press release) -- DeviceForge LLC today announced the launch of DesktopLinux.com -- a major new website exclusively devoted to the use of Linux as a desktop operating system for personal and business purposes. The site features news, opinions, HOWTOs, FAQs, product previews/reviews, product listings, a discussion forum, and links to other web resources, all focused on using -- or learning to use -- Linux as a desktop operating system. A discussion forum with areas devoted to Linux distributions, windowing environments, application software, and system utilities is sure to be a popular area of the new site.

DesktopLinux.com was created by Rick Lehrbaum, founder of the highly popular LinuxDevices.com "Embedded Linux portal". Lehrbaum recently formed DeviceForge LLC, which acquired LinuxDevices.com from CNET, whose subsidiary ZDNet had purchased the site from Lehrbaum in May, 2000.

"Linux is ready now for widespread use as a desktop operating system," said Lehrbaum. "This website will help spread the word and accelerate the transition to a more open desktop, one that offers greater freedom and choice for both personal and business computer users."

"As one of the companies helping to propel the rapidly growing adoption of the Linux desktop, we're excited about the introduction of DesktopLinux.com," said David Patrick, President and CEO of Ximian. "DesktopLinux.com will be an important resource for a large end user and corporate audience, providing the success stories, analyses, reviews and a host of other tools to help them make the switch to a Linux desktop that makes business sense for a growing number of companies."

"Based on my experience with LinuxDevices.com, I fully expect DesktopLinux.com to quickly become the very best information resource for Linux Desktop users," said Jeremy White, president and CEO at CodeWeavers. "As the leading Windows-to-Linux software developer, CodeWeavers absolutely believes that a mass migration of users to the Linux desktop is just around the corner. We therefore welcome this new initiative, and intend to support DesktopLinux.com to the maximum of our abilities."

"In the seven years we have run Linux on our desktops it has evolved from a geek-only environment to something a non-techie could be comfortable using," said Phil Hughes, Publisher, Linux Journal. "It's time for a place on the web to help that non-techie get up and running with Linux and DesktopLinux.com looks like it will be that place."

"Two years ago, when I started LinuxDevices.com, 'Embedded Linux' was unheard of. Now, it's one of the fastest growing OSes in the embedded space," said Lehrbaum. "I believe we're on the verge of a similar explosion in the use of 'Desktop Linux', and I expect DesktopLinux.com to be as much a contributor to that growth as LinuxDevices.com has been to the extraordinary success of Embedded Linux."
