Dec. 19, 2006

Guardian Digital last week released an EnGarde Linux Secure Community 3.0.11 live CD, featuring a 2.6.17 kernel, several bug fixes, a number of enhancements to the Guardian Digital WebTool and the SELinux Control Console, and several new packages available for installation, the company said.

The SELinux Control Console is a new interface that allows users "to monitor the audit logs, toggle enforcing mode and booleans, download the policy to your local computer, and trigger a relabel of the file systems," spokesperson Ryan Maple said.

Key features, as listed by the company, include:
  • SELinux Mandatory Access Control provides high security by strictly enforcing service separation at the kernel level
  • Broad support for server hardware, including 64-bit AMD architecture and hardware RAID
  • Latest BIND 9.3 provides secure DNS services
  • Completely new WebTool, featuring easier navigation and greater ability to manage the complete system via a secure web browser connection
  • RSS feed provides ability to display current news and immediate access to system and security updates
  • Integrated firewall with ability to manage individual firewall rules, control port forwarding, and creation of IP blacklists
  • Real-time access to system and service log information
EnGarde can be used as a web, DNS, email, database, and general Internet server. Intrusion detection, gateway firewall, and complete web management come with EnGarde, and no Linux administration skills are required, Maple said.
