KDE launches first KOffice 1.6 beta

The KDE Project on Sept. 10 released KOffice 1.6-beta1, the first beta release for KOffice 1.6, which the project team said is scheduled for full release this October. The release is meant for testing purposes only, not for deployment on production systems, according to the team.

The principal improvements in v1.6-beta1 over KOffice 1.5, as listed by the project team, are:
  • Kexi (Database application) -- Further enhancements in the database connectivity library; in Table Designer (schema altering without removing table contents, "image" data type); data aware combo boxes (drop-down lists; and data-aware "Image Box" widget in Forms and Table View

  • Krita (Pixel based graphics editor) -- New filters has been added (random noise, random pick, lens correction, filters from krita-plugins); new tool for drawing bezier curves, magnetic selection, perspective transformation and healing has been added

  • Kugar (Reporting tool) -- Kugar's templates are now visible in the startup dialog

  • KPlato (Project management tool) -- Added PERT calculation for estimated value based on optimistic, expected and pessimistic value

  • KFormula (Mathematical formula editor) -- OpenDocument and MathML are now native format; OpenDocument is now the default file format, and most of the standard is now supported
Standard features and components of the KOffice 1.6-beta1 are:
  • a frame-based, full-featured word processor (KWord)
  • a spreadsheet application (KSpread)
  • a presentation application (KPresenter)
  • a flowchart application (Kivio)
  • an integrated database application (Kexi)
  • a new project management application (KPlato)
  • a pixel-based image editing and paint application (Krita)
  • a vector-drawing application (Karbon14)
Additionally, KOffice includes the following "robust embeddable objects," according to the team:
  • business quality reporting software (Kugar)
  • full-featured charting engine (KChart)
  • mathematical formula handling (KFormula)
KOffice also includes a built-in thesaurus (KThesaurus) and support for many different file formats, the team added.

Availability

KOffice and all its components (including the KDE desktop itself) are available free at KDE mirrors.

"This release is principally a public testing and developer solicitation release, and is definitely not intended for anything but testing. Help is welcome!" the team stressed in its announcement of the release.
