May 19, 2004
SearchEnterprise Linux editor Jan Stafford examines a Florida health care facility that is switching to open source Linux. The nonprofit organization is converting desktops to OpenOffice.org for Windows in preparation to migrate to the Linux operating system. Health First's IT pros explain they are moving 3,500 PCs from Microsoft Office 97 in part one, chronicle their migration strategy in part two, and the final installment explains how Novell's services are helping them to successfully move to Nterprise Linux as a final step in improving interoperability and reducing costs. As part of the migration Health First identified nearly 400 applications that needed to be supported using the new strategy and reports that the "CIO and folks from Novell have been contacting these vendors, telling them that if they want to continue business with us, they need to stop coding to a proprietary system."
